American Horror Story - "Home Invasion"

"American Horror Story" was murderous in it's second episode.  Some thoughts on "Home Invasion" coming at you after the break... but first let me look into the Devil's eyes.

Well, "American Horror Story's" ratings may not look great on paper but for a cable channel like FX, they were pretty solid.  The Pilot came in with just over three million viewers and last night's episode dropped to about two and a half million, not too bad.  FX's previous dramas "Light's Out" and "Terriers", both highly liked by critics, only premiered to just over one million and quickly dropped from there, leading to both cancellations. So far, "American Horror Story" can be considered as somewhat of a success for FX and we'll see where the numbers go from here.

As for "Home Invasion", I'd have to say it did a great job of keeping me interested for another week.  I enjoyed that we are continually getting more and more detail of all the gruesome murders that have occurred over the years in the house.  This time, we get to start in 1968 for the terrifying murder of two women by a crazed maniac later compared to Charles Manson.  After witnessing the murders, we flash forward back to present day during one of Ben's sessions with a patient.  This is a new patient and like Tate, I'm immediately suspicious of this girl as I am of any character entering this house.  Turns out she was was using Ben to scope out the house as she and her friends are fans of the 1968 murder and want to come back and re-enact it.

Before that can happen, we first have to get some more information about Vivien's pregnancy, Ben's infidelities and Constance's character.  Ben is still battling with his guilt of cheating on Vivien, and to make matters worse, the girl calls him and reveals she's pregnant.  It seems as if the house can sense his feelings causing him to feel sick until Larry appears again and basically tells Ben he better fix things before the house says it's too late.  After a couple lies, Ben is back in Boston with the girl seeing her through her abortion (rather ironic considering his whole situation started from a miscarriage).

Meanwhile, we learn that Constance may not be as much of the evil bitch that we thought she was, even though she does try to poison Violet (but that was before her heart to heart with Vivien).  Sounds like Constance had it pretty rough as she reveals she has had four children and all were not the perfections she hoped they would be.  She calls her womb cursed and through chocked back tears, asks to stop talking about sad things.  Before she does though, she reassures Vivien that her unborn child is fine, as she can sense that sort of thing.

While Ben is in Boston, our story comes full circle with the patient coming back to the house with her friends to murder Vivien and Violet in the same manner the women were in 1968.  When all seems lost, Tate appears and helps save Violet, while Vivien weasels her way to safety on her own.  From my perspective, it looks like the house and it's spirits are out to protect the Harmon family but time will tell.  When Vivien and Violet are safe and out of the house, Tate, along with Constance and Moira clean up the bodies of the intruders as if it was second nature (how many times have they done this?).  Once the dust has settled and Ben is back home, Vivien declares he is not "home" because they are getting the hell out of this house.

So, my questions still remain.  Who are Constance, Tate and Moria?  Are they spirits or are they real?  The writers keep swaying us either way.  Ben is seen early in the episode speaking on the phone with Tate's mom, so we have to assume he is real but then at the episode's end, he is speaking with Moria and Constance as if they are old ghostly pals.  Then there's Constance who gives us clues that she has a good heart and is just under some sort of curse maybe from living near the house for so many years.  All these questions are where "American Horror Story" is doing things right.  Unlike newbie "Terra Nova", this show is giving us some meat along with suspense and horror.

I look forward to next week and from what I've heard from some other viewers, they can't either.  For a show that started out as an excuse to see some Tammy Taylor, in two short weeks, it has become so much more.

What did everyone else think?  Are you happy with "American Horror Story" so far?  Will you continue watching?
