American Horror Story - Halloween Part 1

I'm back!  Sorry for the lapse in reviews but I was away enjoying some desert sun and recharging my batteries before the winter hits us full on.  I got some fresh thoughts about "Halloween Part 1" coming at you after the break... but first let me lay off the chocolate chips so my Snoopy costume will fit.

"American Horror Story" is continuing to impress me as opposed to some of the other new dramas this season (*cough* "Terra Nova" *cough*).  The writers really know how to tell a story while keeping the mystery alive and keeping the audience wanting more. Last week's episode was by far the best I've seen of "American Horror Story" giving us so much information about the house and the people around it.  We now know that Moira is definitely a ghost (if the dramatic changes in appearance weren't clue enough) and that Constance killed her with a bullet through the eye (hence the different color eyes).  There was also the back story of the house's original owner, Dr Charles Montgomery and the appearance of his wife Nora (which we got more information on this week) as an obvious ghost with a sever wound in the back of her head. Now, let's talk about "Halloween Part 1".

Again, we open up with the same format of a previous murder in house, this time it was more recent, only a year ago on Halloween.  The gay couple, Chad and Patrick that we have heard so much about, are seen arguing over their relationship and the frustration of trying to sell the house (Chad is played by Zachery Quito from "Heroes" who ironically "came out" last week).  We quickly see that their death was not a murder suicide but the same masked man that we assume impregnated Vivian actually killed them both. Who is this masked man and why hasn't he tried to kill Vivian or Ben yet?

Flash forward to Halloween 2011.  Seems this is a special day for all the ghosts and spirits of the house as we see all of the past victims appearing and interacting with the family.  The twins from the pilot are seen throwing eggs at Ben, Ben's ex-lover (who was killed last week!) shows up at episode's end, and of course, our gay couple from the beginning are helping "fluff" things up for Halloween.  So all the ghosts are out and about and it seems as if they can even leave the property for once.  Tate goes out and gets coffee with Ben in his first appearance outside the house and Moira leaves to go see her mother whom she "pulls the plug" on.  As the mythology behind the house and the perimeters of which the ghosts live by are slowly presenting themselves, I find myself becoming more and more engrossed in the show.

As for the house, it looks like the sick, drug addicted Doctor that built it, is to blame for most of the crazy shit that goes on.  After performing over a dozen illegal abortions in the basement for extra cash, it would seem he created a darkness over the house, not to mention the creature he created trying to "Frankenstein" his son back to life.  I would assume this leads to the evil that resides inside the house and the reason the ghosts such as Moira or Tate (not confirmed that he is a ghost) are being held against their will by the house.  Maybe Ben and his family can help them move on but first Ben needs to deal with his own demons - as it seems the house is feeding off of them.

In addition to all the mystery and questions, our story arc also progressed.  We learn that Vivien's baby is growing at an abnormal rate and whatever the doctor saw in the ultrasound made her faint.  Ben is continuing to battle with his emotions of cheating and betraying his family, not to mention the murder of his pregnant ex-lover. Then there was poor Addie - she just wanted to be a pretty girl for Halloween and have attractive men pay attention to her - only to be struck down in a hit and run car accident by episode's end.  Again, great story telling and I'm not seeing many flaws in any of the acting.  Let's hope the writers and actors can keep this pace for the rest of the season.

My last "American Horror Story" review has become the most viewed post on this blog and still counting, so now that I know you're out there, I ask all of you to chime in and tell me what you think?  Why did Constance try to drag Addie back onto the lawn of the house?  Could the house save her?  What do you think is growing inside Vivien's womb? Who do you think is the masked man?
